Test Fitting Floor Pans

Posted: May 31, 2011 in Uncategorized

I test fit the floor pans this afternoon. I just laid them in there to get a general idea of fit. The main front floor pan was really good. The fit was right, and it gave me enough transmission tunnel area to fix what I needed.

The toe board fit okay. The corner where the transmission tunnel will meet is going to need some fabrication to fit. The rest of the panel fit fine.

The rear floor board however I am not real pleased with. The stamped rounded area around the “bowl” of the floor pan has been cut and bent rather than stamped. It means I will have to do extra welding and fab work on them to fit.  The other sheet metal floor pan vendor has a rear floor panel that goes all the way to the rocker panel and is stamped like the original. However it is 3 times the cost!  I am going to have to think about how I want to proceed with the rear pans.

The left picture is of the RH Passenger rear floor well.  The Right picture is how poorly it fits in there. The stamped corners in the original piece are merely cut and left with an open seam all the way around.

So, in between rain showers, I decided to dig into cleaning out the Ranch Wagon. I removed the Front seat, swept up all the stuff on the floors in order to get a real good look at what I am dealing with.

It looks pretty good. Of course comparing it to the floor of the first Ranch wagon they are Cherry! The under floor bracing seems solid, with only one needing replacing.  The under seat section of the floor is solid as well. It looks like I will be able to use the cheaper floor pans after all.

The seat springs are in good shape, and will be reused. They have been moved to the garage rafter storage area because it will be awhile before I get to that part of the restoration.

Next I will be setting the new floor pans down to see how they will all line up.

**Side note: Rusty the Parts wagon is gone. He was drug onto a flat bed wrecker and was given a ceremonious crushing last week.  So long Pal.

I took a couple of pictures of both Wagons next to eachother last week. I felt a photograph was needed to contrast between the 2 wagons sitting side by side.

The parts wagon was supposed to get picked up by a scrapper this weekend, but he never showed.  So I will arrange for another scrapper to come and take Rusty away.  I don’t mind, but I would like the parking space on the concrete pad for the new wagon.  By the way, my wife has given my new wagon a name.   She says he looks like a “Wilson”.  How she came to that name, I have no clue but she has referred to him as Wilson a couple of times now and I kind of like it.  It’s Respectable, and dignified.  So “Wilson” it is.

Floor Pans are Here.

I ordered a complete set of floor pans & rocker panels.  They look like they will work.  Here is the right hand passenger side toe board:

I will be investing in a welder soon. Until then I will be collecting more parts.
